Are your studies on automatic pilot?

January 16th, 2011 · No Comments

Here in the South, where I am currently located, we have been rewarded with snow both the day after Christmas and last week.

As I watched the snow fall all day on Monday, a question crossed my mind.  How many inches of rain are in an inch of snow?

Seems like an easy enough question, right?  All I need to do is look it up online, correct?

Now, I do a fair amount of research online.  But I still truly prefer to find something in a book.  Maybe it’s because I can mark the book up if it’s mine, or maybe because I find comfort in the fact that books usually have an editor reading over the finished product as a quality control check to try to make sure that the information presented is correct before the book is printed.

So I did a search on a major search engine, and I found out, according to one posting that is out there on a forum where people go to post questions and answers, that one inch of snow equals 10 inches of rain.

Huh?

I guess you can see why I might be confused here.  That sure doesn’t sound right.

My bet is that the author meant the opposite.

And my point for this post is a simple one.  Whenever you are learning something new, always be willing to question it.

And if at all possible, do that questioning in a spirit of sincerely wanting to learn and improve yourself, as well as sincerely wanting to help someone else to grow as well.

Do that, and you can’t help but improve your classwork and your studies.  Sometimes we all  may get into a routine of just learning what we are told without questioning that it is like life is on automatic pilot.  But it can also be fun to take charge and take control of our own learning.  Done daily, that should increase your chances of getting into the Air Force Academy.

And by the way, I did find the answer to my question online.  According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the national average is 13 inches of snow equals 1 inch of rain, but it can vary depending upon whether the snow is wet or powdery and other factors.
