I’m currently reading Samuel Adams: A Life, by Ira Stoll. The biography of one of America’s Founding Fathers chronicles the role that Samuel Adams played in declaring America’s independence from Britain and the leadership role that he played during the Revolutionary War and the post-war period that followed.
Although I’ve just started the book, it reminds me of a very important principle.
- Readers are Leaders.
Or maybe it’s “Leaders are Readers.” Doesn’t matter. Successful political leaders, business leaders, or military leaders have the discipline to continually upgrade their knowledge and skills, and one of the ways that they accomplish these goals is by developing and following a professional reading program.
Successful people don’t get to be successful without learning from others and applying what they have learned in their own lives. This is one of the many benefits that a reading program for professional and personal growth provides.
What’s also great about reading is that what you read can be stored in your mind until just the right moment. You may read about something that you will never think that you’ll use. You may not need what you have read for years. Then suddenly, you may be faced with a situation where you can use what you have learned through your reading to solve a problem, or to help you better face a tough situation.
What have you been reading lately? Will what you are reading pay dividends by making you more successful in the future?
The Air Force and all other branches of the military have their own professional reading programs. Starting your own professional reading program is an investment that you can make today for your future success.
And if you start your own professional reading program, you should be able to see how you may have an edge in the Air Force Academy’s admissions process once you finish reading Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 of Zoomie to Be: How to Win an Appointment to the Air Force Academy .
